A Cardinal Protector

20 Jul

This is my first day back in Bangkok, so give me a bit of a break when it comes to this first entry.  After all, I didn’t get to my apartment until well after 2:00am, so I’m still a bit tired.

Yes, I know.  Based on my late arrival and this first day it seems like I must be desperate for Bangkok Blog posts to include during this visit.  After all, this post isn’t even set in Bangkok.  But wait, it’s kind of about Spirit Houses – one of my favourite topics.  So, I feel fine to include it.

In the backyard of our Toronto house, we have a little Spirit House that keeps our house and garden safe.  The Spirits occupying this house, I think, speak English.  But I’m not sure of that.  But what I do know is that the Spirits and their house are generally protected by birds, like the lovely cardinal shown in the photos above.

The birds protect the House from marauding squirrels and racoons who generally try to bust up the structure while looking for food.

But no, between the Spirits and their protective bird flock, our Spirit House has remained safe and untouched for many years through winters as well as summers.  And the fact that this Thai designed and built Spirit House has managed to make it through many Toronto winters is a testament to its quality and to the fact that the Spirits have managed to adapt to our Canadian climate, along with the help, of course, of their guardian bird protectors.

Thats’s it for this not from Bangkok blog post. Hopefully I’ll have something more local to write about tomorrow. Oh, and by the way, my apartment internet is not working so I’ve had to write and publish this on my phone.  So, who knows if it even makes it to its final Bangkok Blog resting place.

  1. I love my spirit houses (one which you gave me!) as sometimes Chubb House Insurance just not enough.

(Plus just arranging furniture to ensure the spirits are happy seems somehow too fake)

Spirit Houses from Thailand are clearly well built and have a great feel to them, as if as in the Ghost Busters movies, they have the cool ability to vacuum up nasty green slimy creatures of a foggy ethereal kind!

With the ghosts of Casa Loma lurking in your neighbourhood, positioning one in your backyard just makes plain common sense

(might keep the spirit of bankruptcy away too. Sir Pellat should have invested in a Spirit House to keep
him from investing his money in Government funded ventures…..oh wait! Better get one for your Toronto office lobby too!)

    Anyway

i just like them. The concept makes sense. Thais always figure these things out it seems

    Chipmunks are small but wise

Lurking imprisoned spirits best left alone

    • I’m certainly hoping that the Spirit House does a good job of not only protecting our home, but also staving off any possibilities of bankruptcy like the situation our historical friend from down the street found himself. Mind you our house is a bit smaller than Casa Loma. Well, more than a bit.

  2. I have cardinals at my bird feeder. Also blue jays, the squirrels can’t get to the food, fun to watch, I think the birds throw seeds to the ground for the squirrels ha ha ha , love keep safe Hazel

    • Birds of many types come to the little pond we have to bathe and drink. And I suppose they also keep the Spirits company.

  3. You have a beautiful male cardinal protecting your Spirit house. I remember seeing it when I used to come to do the bookkeeping. It is lovely.
