The King’s Farewell

The final departure of King Rama IX

On October 26th, the 5-day funeral and cremation of the late King, Rama IX, took place.  I thought I’d mark the event and date in the Bangkok Blog.

King Bhumibol Adulyadej had reined longer than any other monarch and his death was a sad time in Thailand, where he was highly revered.  In the year of mourning, since his death, pictures of him have continued to hang all over the country.

The funeral ceremony, apparently the most expensive in recent history at $90 million, was attended by hundreds of thousands of people and likely watched by everyone else in the country on their televisions, phones and computers.

The BBC published a very good overview of the ceremonies, both in words and video,  with a link to some photos taken during the initial day.  You might want to take a look at the article, as it shows a very magnificent affair.

Just after reading through the BBC article, I came across a website put up by the Thai government dealing with the funeral.  It goes into great detail about the ceremonies, both in pictures and words.  It is worth looking at, if you’re interested. I thought it was worth saving here as a remembrance of this significant historical even in Thailand.  I hope that the government does not remove this site, after the ceremonies, as it is a useful historical marker.
