Songkran: Thai New Year’s

15 Apr

The holiday where getting wet is the idea.

This is my first day in Bangkok.  It’s Sunday and I want to use the day to get myself oriented, meet my colleagues and generally see what kind of trouble I’m in for.  It’s also Songkran – Thai New Year.  So because I don’t have too much time for writing today, I’ll promise to report on this festive holiday in the coming days.

Unlike New Year’s Day in Canada, Songkran goes on for several days.  It started last Thursday and will end  on Monday night.  Thais love long holidays.  They’re sensible when it comes to allocating holidays.

In the next day or so, I will explain a bit about Songkran, which is also known as the Water Festival.  Back in April 2013, I posted an entry an about the holiday.  But I’ll try to get into Songkran 2018 in tomorrow’s entry.  For now all you need to know are the key points:

  • You get wet during this holiday
  • Just as you dry off, you get wet again.

I will write a bit more about Songkran later.  For now, I’ll go meet my colleagues, check to see what’s in store on the work front and probably get a bit wet while I’m at it.

To wet your appetite for more Songkran wetness, take a look at this very short video.

Happy New Year

  1. It seems this Thai holiday reflects daily living.

To get wet. You manage to dry off just to get wet again!

I love that the elephants are enjoying themselves shooting water at passerby/tourists

Looked like one big car wash!
