Street Art…

…improves the quality of life in the city

In past Bangkok Blog posts, I have talked about the amazing graffiti that can be found in Bangkok. I am not sure if the quality is better here than in other cities, but I do know that graffiti and its artists are taken pretty seriously here. Even the municipal government sanctions and often pays for a great deal of street art – to a much greater extent that one might see in Toronto. Actually, in Toronto, there is usually a major press release when one just one street art commission in announced. And there seems to always be coverage of the people who want to remove graffiti from various public spaces. In Bangkok, there seems to be street art going up somewhere on a continuing basis. It’s part of the life in the city.

As mentioned above, I have spent a lot of time writing about Bangkok Graffiti in past ramblings. For instance, in a recent post, take a look at photo 10 in the slide show. Back in July of 2014, I wrote what I called a Lazy Entry on Graffiti and in July 2008, I wrote a first piece on Graffiti. This entry was corrupted due to technical issues, but it can be found in its reconstructed form here. In that entry, there was a masterpiece movie that I made, which was also lost for awhile.  (You can see the evidence of the missing movie in the post.)  However I found it and have included it below. (It even had a pretty cool music track.)

This leads me to a series of photos that are shown in the slide show at the top of this entry. The photos are of some of the newest works of street art in Bangkok. I found these in an exhibition piece that I was looking through while trying to clear my head after my first full day of work here. I was really taken by the quality of the work. (The art work and not my work that is.)  Hopefully you will be too.

Some people consider graffiti to be a menace – for example, our former mayor, Rob Ford.  He and his tribe hate graffiti.  But I think the type of work you will see in the slide show definitely qualifies as art that should be praised. It improves the quality of the life in the city.

  1. I loved the old video! And the new graffiti is certainly sophisticated. At least Rob Ford is not in the news internationally anymore.

    • It’s good that I was able to recover all the old videos. They all got lost for awhile because of the changes that Apple and others made to the technology. I have noticed that the street art is getting bigger, more colourful and more sophisticated. It seems like some pretty serious artists are into this art form. Maybe the next Banksy will come from Bangkok. And as for Rob Ford – good thing he’s not in the news anymore.

    • You do realize that with all the new super hero movies and tv shows, it would only be a matter of time before the famous duo of TigerMan and HammerHead made their debut. And, of course, they have their not so famous PilotFish Guy checking for villains from below. Your life is now safer knowing that these two, whether on land or on water, are working to protect us. Thank goodness for that.
